How long will it take for me to begin to see results? You will be very happy to hear that if you're regularly practicing, you will likely be able to discern noticeable changes to your vocal abilities starting after 1-2 weeks.
-
Are you Trans?Yes I am! I began transitioning back in 2020 and haven't looked back since!
-
What are your credentials? Here's a brief run down of some of my education highlights: Bachelor of Education Degree (University of Alberta) Transgender Voice and Beyond: Voice and Communication Training for Gender Expression Certification (American Speech- Language- Hearing Association) Voice and Communication Across the Gender Continuum Course (American Speech- Language- Hearing Association) Beyond Voice Feminization: Total Communication (American Speech- Language- Hearing Association)
-
Will my voice sound "cis- passing?"Yes! Just like a cis voice, the key is it sounding natural. For that reason we focus on so much more than just the voice. We target chronic and/ or acute muscle tension, breath support issues, anxiety and many other factors that are likely to inhibit you from reaching your ftm/ mtf voice goals.
-
Are you a member of any professional organizations?Yes! I'm a member of VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) in addition to the Teachers Association.
-
Are there any benefits to voice work besides a new voice? This is one of my favorite questions and the answer is YES! Having been a teacher for most of my professional career, one common misconception was that a teachers job is to teach curriculum and that's it. In actuality, were trained to to a whole lot more, for instance we know how to grow student confidence/ self efficacy, we adapt to individuals interests so that students can become intrinsically motivated by tasks and assignments, and we develop learner communication skills, just to name a few. In all honesty, teaching students how to recognize their own value and become the most self assured and confident versions of themselves was always my favorite part of being a teacher. TL;DR: I not only teach voice, but through teacher "witchcraft and mind tricks" I teach students how to become the best versions of themselves.
-
Have you been featured anywhere?Yes! I've been interviewed and featured on CTV National News (Canada's largest News network), 630 CHED Radio and I was also a guest on the podcast BOOTH2BOOTH where I discussed the ins and outs of Gender and the voice.
-
I've hit a road block trying to do Gender Affirming Voice Work on my own, can you help?Absolutely! Vocal success goes beyond the voice which is why I assess student growth on a multitude of factors so when individuals feel like they've hit a road block, through my assessments I can highlight where in fact growth is happening and provide you with clear feedback on what you can do to achieve the next step.
-
Do I need any special equipment for sessions? You'll only need two things for sessions: a working cam and mic!
-
Will my private insurance cover the cost of voice training?Coverage varies between insurance providers but in some cases yes!
-
Are sessions held virtually?Yes, all sessions are held virtually over Google Meets

COLLABORATION
You have specific vision for your voice and I want to give it to you. We'll talk all about your goals and priorities as well as what other skills you're hoping to develop through voice training and from there a work of art will begin to form that summarizes the voice that you have envisioned. Once we have this visual to guide us, we'll begin to collaborate on what exactly is the best path forward for you and your dream.

SCAFFOLDING
After spending a decade in Education, old teacher habits die hard, for this reason, I'm a stickler for lesson planning for each individual student session. I align what you need to learn (your goals and priorities) with which methodology best suits your learning style and finally, I devise a plan of assessment.
TL;DR: I do fancy teacher stuff

Biofeedback
You're going to be amazed at how we can use biofeedback and mindfulness to create sounds that are 'on pitch.' It's like finding your vocal sweet spot by feel, rather than by note. For instance, when you raise your pitch and focus on a head voice, you'll actually start to feel the vibrations in your lips instead of your chest or throat. That shift in sensation is your built-in guide to hitting the right pitch. I teach you to recognize and rely on these bodily cues, making finding your voice so much easier.

BREATHWORK
What if I told you your parents and teachers were probably your first encounter with learning bad breathing habits. The whole "sit up straight" for proper manners sake did us no favors. Whats more is that additional factors such as stress, anxiety and work habits (to name a few) are other examples of what can compromise and erode our ability to use our breath to project and carry our voice. If left unaddressed while working towards our trans voice goals, the result becomes pressed, weak and/ or breathy (and of course we don't want that).
I THANK MY PAST SELF EVERY SINGLE DAY
I'll let you in on a little secret, I wasn't always this extroverted and chipper, in fact at points throughout my transition I was anything but. At the start of my transition I often found myself struggling with mental health and routinely questioning whether or not I made the right choice to essentially start over and begin living life as my most authentic self. Insecurities, anxieties and feelings of hopelessness were my closest friends at that point, but I thank my past self every single day for making the decision to begin Trans Voice Training and committing myself to finding my true voice.
I say this with as much sincerity as possible, trans voice training changed my life. Once I found my voice all of my transition and life goals began to click, I felt like my new voice granted me permission to finally exist in the world as I am. With the help of Gender Affirming Voice Training I felt like my new voice validated not just my identity but my dreams as well.

Since finding happiness in voice, here are a few of the things that have become my favorite things:

-
Checking out live theater secretly hoping that I'll get chosen for audience participation
-
Going for obscenely long walks
-
Living my best hipster life and checking out all the Craft Breweries
-
Feeling like a cool kid, going to hole in the wall music venues
-
Spending my afternoons working out of 'Dark Academia' style cafes
-
Singing along to songs that I have no business singing
YOUR INDIVIDUAL VOICE
"Previous vocal coaches and online resources have been helpful in having a more "passing" voice but I felt I wasn't being supported in finding my own individual voice in a way that felt natural and expressive. Kylie helped me to develop vocal techniques and a style that feels more personal, preserving and exploring what I really enjoy about my voice while learning new ways to meet my vocal goals. Working with Kylie has really helped me move forward in developing my voice, and I'd highly recommend her as a vocal coach."
